On CNN news’ website, Eoghan Macguire’s article “The $50 earthquake alarm that could save thousands of lives” examines a new technology that may be a successful and low-cost early warning system for earthquakes. The Grillo, meaning “cricket” in Spanish, was created by a technology entrepreneur, Andres Meira, when he moved to Mexico City after having worked in Haiti. Influenced by the major destruction he saw, he created the alarm-clock-sized detector. It taps into the special frequencies used by Mexico’s advanced seismic warning systems, SASMEX. SASMEX receivers proved to be way more expensive -- $330 apiece. Meira’s Grillo offers a more financial and safe option for common people, although his team anticipates issues with government sourced data. They plan to make an app to connect phones to special Grillo Active warning systems that sense seismic waves themselves and that will be placed along the coast.
